Say potato, say Agrico

Chip shop sector
Alex Moore, Agrico UK Sales Manager said: “Our varieties have made up a large proportion of the potatoes supplied to the chip shop sector over the years. However, previously we have had very little interaction with the shops themselves. We are thrilled to be working closely with the Chip Ambassadors to launch two of our exciting new varieties. As a business we are always trying to breed better tasting and more sustainable potato varieties. In Babylon and Lugano we have both! We place a lot of emphasis on product management and this link with the Chip Ambassadors, Isle of Ely and the growers will help us ensure that each area of the supply chain know how to get the best out of Agico varieties, to give the end customer the best chips they can buy.”
Next Generation salad potato variety
New potato variety on track to achieve 2 million tubers per hectare
A next generation salad potato variety might have the potential to become a new market leader, as it seems to be on track to achieve 2 million tubers per hectare. The variety is called Jacky and it is on target to produce 2 million tubers per hectare with 65% sized 25-35mm. It would be yielding 50 tons per hectare overall.
Paul Coleman revealed the trial data while demonstrating Crop4Sight – an app for managing potato crop yield – during AHDB’s Potato Showcase Week. “Jacky could be a real game changer. I first saw it as a seedling in some of Greenvale’s trials and realised its potential.”
Jacky is a high-yielding second early potato variety. Bred to consistently produce round tubers below 45mm with pale yellow flesh, it is seen as ideal for the UK’s salad market. Jacky scores 8 for black dot, 9 for foliar and tuber blight, Agrico, the seed supplier that developed the variety, explained.
Farminguk.com quoted Archie Gibson, executive director at Agrico, as saying: "It’s a highly versatile potato. Being robust and very round it rolls nicely on webs and conveyors and doesn’t tend to suffer from harvest damage. The discovery trial with Agrico is building the data that will give growers highly accurate management knowledge needed to optimise Jacky’s high performance as soon as it comes to market.”
“When we initially modelled the variety, we thought we could get 50t/yield with 90% of the crop in the 25-45mm range. And it’s on track; Jacky has hit 45t already with 2.2 m tubers.”
