Markies | The potato variety in Tanzania for French fries (chips) and crisps.

Great characteristics

Markies is a very good potato for French fries (chips) and crisps. Processors, hotels and restaurants highly value it for its frying characteristics and taste. Its low sugar level remains for a long time enabling excellent cooking quality.

It is yellow skin potato and late maturing (120 days).

  • Maturity: late (>4 months)
  • Yield potential: high (15-20 tons/acre)

Potato variety Markies

Plant description

Markies is an erect tall variety with white flowers. The variety has good heat tolerance.

Disease resistance/tolerance

A preventative spraying schedule against late blight is necessary even though Markies is only slightly susceptible to this. Markies is early blight sensitive and therefore a good treatment against this is necessary.

  • Large, oval to long oval tubers, uniform in shape
  • Yellow skin
  • Yellow flesh
  • Shallow eyes
  • Good resistance to internal bruising

Planting distance

  • Seed size 1: 20-25cm
  • Seed size 2: 30-35cm
