King opens Agrico Research’s new laboratory in Bant

Bant, 4 November 2026 – On Wednesday 4 November, His Majesty the King officially opened Agrico Research’s new laboratory building in Bant. With the opening of this new research centre, Agrico is investing in the further strengthening of innovation, sustainability and breeding research within the potato sector. State Secretary Silvio Erkens of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature was also present at the opening.

The new laboratory forms the beating heart of Agrico Research’s research and breeding programme. Here, researchers work daily on new breeding and selection methods for the development of potato varieties that contribute to food security, resistance to diseases and pests, and sustainable potato cultivation. Modern research techniques make it possible to gain a faster and more accurate understanding of the genetic traits that are important for future potato varieties.

During his visit, the King was briefed on the importance of plant breeding for Dutch and international agriculture and horticulture. Following the official opening ceremony, during which the King himself carried out a DNA analysis, he was given a guided tour of the new laboratory. Here, he was introduced to various aspects of the breeding process, including DNA isolation, molecular marker technology and quality testing.

Investing in the potato of the future

According to Peter Oldenkamp, director of Agrico Research, the new building provides ample space to further develop the research:

“In our new laboratory, we excel in plant breeding using molecular markers, genomic selection, disease testing and in vitro cultures. The modern facilities support researchers in developing knowledge and innovations that contribute to future-proof potato cultivation. Issues such as food security and sustainable crop production play an important role in this. The building has been designed with a focus on efficiency, sustainability and flexibility. A great deal of timber has been used in the new laboratory building. This results in a prestigious appearance that, in terms of colour and material, blends into the polder landscape. Furthermore, functionality was the guiding principle in the design. Thanks to its flexible, modular layout and the structural preparations made, the laboratory building is ready for potential future expansion.”
